Overview

Owen River Lodge is one of New Zealand’s newest boutique five-star fishing lodges, located near Murchison, in the Nelson Lakes district of the South Island of New Zealand.

The famous author/angler Zane Grey described New Zealand as an “Angler's Eldorado”. He was right on the mark – especially when you look at the trout fishery. New Zealand has developed a reputation for having the best sighted river fishing for trout in the world.

You may have heard New Zealand’s rivers described as being “Gin Clear” – well its true! Imagine stalking a 10lb brown trout, in water so clear, that water which looks one-foot deep is actually up to your waist!

Owen River Lodge is centrally located, with easy access to the Nelson/Marlborough and West Coast fisheries. This unique location places the lodge right in the middle of the best dry fly and nymph brown trout fishery in the world. Thus, guests can enjoy fly fishing on numerous blue-ribbon streams and rivers, with over 30 waters accessible by road (most within one hour’s drive), and countless others by helicopter.

The lodge sits on the bank of the Owen River, providing guests with views that are simply breathtaking, with sensational views of the Owen River, the valley and the mountains beyond. The facilities comprise the main lodge building, which includes the dining room, lounge room, sitting room and of course, the bar. To ensure absolute privacy, guests are accommodated in one of six guest cottage suites that are located in the gardens, with stunning views of the river, the valley and the mountains beyond. The cottages were constructed in 2003, when the lodge was extensively refurbished. They are configured with either a king-size double bed or twin king-size single beds. There are six cottages, giving Owen River Lodge a total capacity of 12 guests.

One of the highlights of your stay at Owen River Lodge will be the meals. New Zealand's unique cuisine has grown from a fusion of highly distinct cultures - Mâori, Polynesian, Asian and every kind of European. Owen River Lodge calls the cuisine that emerges from this fusion - Pacifica cuisine. The food at Owen River Lodge could best be described as stunning. They use the best of fresh, locally sourced produce and wines. Naturally the tariff includes all meals and non-alcoholic beverages.

The secret to maximizing your fishing experience is to use an experienced fishing guide. Owen River Lodge highly recommends you use the services of one of their friendly and knowledgeable guides. Their local knowledge will be invaluable as will their almost mystical ability to spot trout. For the traveling angler, the lodge has a selection of Simms Guide waders, Simms guide boots and Sage rods and reels for guests to use.

Stylish, understated accommodation location, stunning food, superb service and outstanding fishing.

Owen River Lodge - Luxurious, warm and inviting.
