| Fishing Information |
The Yentna River is a glacial-fed tributary of the Susitna River. Because of the turbidity of the water, all fishing is done on many clear water tributaries. Northwoods Lodge is located on Fish Lakes Creek and is only three miles from Lake Creek. You can also fish up to six other creeks within boating distance of the lodge. Lake Creek (the largest of the rivers) is 60 miles long, running north to south from Chelatna Lake in the Alaska Mountain Range to the Yentna River.
Lake Creek is a dynamic, meandering river with many isolated islands, gravel bars, and backwater areas. It is easily fished by spin and fly fishermen in a similar way and is typically done from the river bank, back trolling, or wading out from mid-stream shallow areas.
Fishing the wild Alaska rivers offers the opportunity to experience nature at its best whether your method of fishing is fly fishing or spin fishing. Fishing is done directly from the Alaska fishing lodge in the 20-foot custom built boats.
Northwoods provides top of the line G-Loomis rods with Shimano spinning reels or Abu Garcia Bait Casters.
Northwoods also has a small supply of G-Loomis fly rods and reels for the fisherman who would like to learn to fly fish. Whether the fish are upstream or at the mouth of the rivers, your guide has a prop boat and a jet boat at their disposal to get you to the fish. |
| Types of Fishing |
Spin and bait casting.
Fly fishing from prop or jet boats or from the shore or wading, depending upon where the fish are at that particular time. |
| Species of Fish Caught |
All five species of Pacific salmon, King, Silver, Sockeye, Pink and Chum salmon, as well as resident Rainbow trout, Arctic grayling and Northern pike. |
| Sample Itinerary |
Day One
You will be flying to Northwoods Lodge this morning by float plane from the world’s largest floatplane base. You will be departing from Lake Hood with Trail Ridge Air at 7:30am or 4:00pm. This will be a 40-minute flight. Photo opportunities are available during the flight, so keep your camera within reach.
Upon arrival Eric and/or Shan and your guide will greet you. You will be shown to your cabin and given time to prepare for the day’s fishing activities. Meet Eric and/or Shan back at the main lodge for a brief orientation of the lodge facilities, fishing regulations, and your daily schedule. You will be issued a fishing license (extra cost). Your guide will inquire about your fishing and beverage preferences during your stay.
Your guide will assist you in selecting hip boots (if needed) and will then meet you down at the dock as soon as you are ready. A hearty lunch has already been prepared for you and your group and is in your guide boat. If there is anything special you would like in your lunch, please let the kitchen staff know after the first day.
Your first day of fishing may not begin until 9:30am, after arriving at 8:30am, allowing time for unpacking, orientation, and gearing up. You will return to the lodge between 4:30-5:00pm, so you can shower and change, enjoy a cocktail and hors d’oeuvre before dinner at 6:00pm.
You are welcome to enjoy some evening fishing from about 7:30-10:00pm. Northwoods allows guests eight hours of guided fishing per day, so you can break it down into the time frames you prefer. Your guide will advise you as to the best times for fishing depending upon the weather each day. If you are the only group at the lodge, you can set your own schedule and have breakfast later, if you wish. There is also the option of going fishing early in the morning and coming back for a brunch around 11:00am. If you have done all the fishing you can or want for the day, then relax in the lodge with a book or watch your favorite sports event on satellite television. You can play horseshoes, basketball, take a walk or run on the Northwoods nature trail, go canoeing or kayaking on the lake, watch an Alaskan sunset, enjoy the hot tub with its scenic view, take a wood fired revitalizing sauna, or just relax on the large spacious deck overlooking beautiful Fish Lakes Creek.
Day Two
Breakfast is served at 7:00am. For early risers, coffee is available in the main lodge at 6:00am. Each day you will have a packed lunch, shore lunch or come in for brunch, depending upon the species of salmon and time of year.
Day Three
Much the same as the other days with variation in fishing locations. This would be the time to schedule that Mt. Denali (McKinley) flight-seeing tour, Northern Pike or Rainbow Trout fishing.
Last Day
Depending upon your departure time, you will either have breakfast and then prepare for departure around 9:00am. Or, if you are departing in the afternoon, you will spend most of the day fishing or giving yourself a few hours back at the lodge to prepare for departure. |
