| Access |
Access by road or float plane. The North Bay, Ontario airport which is connected by a number of daily scheduled flights from Toronto, is about one hour and 15 minutes from the Lodge by automobile. Suitable vehicles are available for rent there, although some guests prefer to reach Beauchene by cab from that airport. Float Plane transportation from North Bay and Toronto can be arranged through the Lodge. Pick-ups are available at an extra cost each way. |
| Accommodations |
The White House Main Lodge: The Lodge has a combination of bedrooms with two and three beds, each with a three-piece bathroom. There is an ice-maker available for use of guests and, like each of the other American Plan facilities, a refrigerator for guests' beverages. Coffee, tea, and snacks are always freely available.
Luxury “Bird Cabins”: Each "Bird Cabin" is unique and offers absolutely deluxe accommodation accessible by automobile. Each is located on its own private waterfront with a dock. The cabins offer two or three bedrooms and bathrooms, and can accommodate a party of up to six people. They provide open concept living/dining facilities with fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens, large porches overlooking Lac Beauchêne, gas barbecues, and everything else that you need for a luxurious fishing vacation stay. Guests staying at the Bird Cabins generally take their meals at the White House, a short walk, drive, or boat trip away, although by prior arrangement guests may prefer to arrange to do their own cooking. For a truly memorable meal the lodge’s chef can provide a fully catered meal in your own private dining room.
The Moose Cabin: This handsome, well furnished, two-storey log cabin has three large bedrooms with a total of ten beds, and three full bathrooms. A granite fireplace centers a large open-concept living-dining area. The cabin includes a large fully equipped kitchen. Because it so comfortably accommodates groups of six to ten guests, Moose is especially popular with business groups and offers privacy, complete facilities, and a comfortable setting for meetings.
The Fox & Otter Cabins: These two connecting (but private) log cabins, each with its own entrance, and porch, have well furnished sitting areas, log burning stoves, refrigerators, and three-piece bathrooms. They are available separately for two to three persons each, or together for groups of six.
The Bear Cabin: This one-storey log cabin (wheelchair accessible) has two bedrooms, a three-piece bathroom, refrigerator, and a comfortable sitting room with log burning stove. It is great for groups of four and is especially popular with families.
Outpost Cabins: La Réserve Beauchêne offers three Outpost cabins, which provide privacy in a remote rustic setting. Some guests return year after year to their favorite outpost for a unique wilderness experience.
Bear Bay Campground: The beautiful campground is located on the north side of Bear Bay near the east end of Lake Beauchêne where it enjoys the prevailing onshore wind. It is beautifully wooded with pine and other trees and is restricted to five well-spaced campsites, each of which has a picnic table and fronts on the lake. A lovely sand beach runs along the whole shoreline in front of the campground. A bath house with hot and cold water, showers, and flush toilets make camping here a little more civilized. |
| Dining |
The dining room serves up some of the finest meals you’ll find anywhere with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The menu changes nightly and the chef is happy to prepare your “catch” any way you like it and respond to your special dietary needs. With five courses of generous portions it’s hard to find room for Beauchêne’s famous homemade deserts including maple syrup pie. A select wine list is provided and the courteous serving staff is happy to recommend the perfect accompaniment to your meal. Beauchêne's meal hours are designed to accommodate early morning risers who would like to be on the water before breakfast as well as night owls who like to fish after dinner and in the evening.
Breakfast: There is a full a la carte menu, served from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. However, juice, cereal, toast, muffins, coffee, tea, etc. are available at dawn (or earlier) for those who wish to get out early and not return until later in the day.
Lunch: Most guests take a packed lunch with them, although some do return for service in the White House dining room. Lunch includes your selection from a wide variety of sandwich makings, vegetable sticks, cheese, desserts, and drinks. Everything necessary for that famous standard of good Canadian Northern lodges, the shore lunch, are available and be sure to ask for a shore lunch if you are using a guide.
Dinner: Served from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the benefit of both guests who want to go out again after dinner and those who stay on the water longer during the afternoon. You will find that the meals are superb, with the main problem being when to push yourself away from the table.
Special Needs: If you are a vegetarian, have a particular allergy, or have other special food needs, Beauchêne will be happy to accommodate those requirements. Let let them know in advance so the chef can make arrangements for the appropriate provisions. |
| Bar Service |
Beauchêne is licensed for sale of alcoholic beverages in the dining room and lounge. A nice variety of fine wines is available at dinner. |
| Meeting Facilities |
“The Whitehouse,” a gracious southern colonial style lodge, houses a dining room, meeting room, and lounge that can be used for business meetings. A computer with satellite internet access is provided. The total capacity is 60 people in the dining room and 40 people in the conference rooms. |
| Fishing Information |
Fishing is what separates Beauchêne from other destinations, with 40 lakes and seven fish species all within La Réserve Beauchêne’s 50,000 acre territory. Whatever your fishing style, be it fly fishing for brookies, casting top water for smallies, plugging for pike, jigging for walleye, spoon feeding lakers, spinning for whitefish, or sinking a line for splake, it all happens in front of or just a short drive from the lodge.
The Beauchêne experience is pretty much whatever you would like it to be. Over 16 brook trout lakes offer classic natural brookies in the five-pound range or fly fishing only lakes where the trout are always at the ready.
Splake, a lake trout/brook trout cross, with specimens growing to the seven pounds range offer a rare angling opportunity for any seasoned outdoorsmen.
Lake Beauchêne boasts about a 2.5 pound average when it comes to smallmouth bass. These quality fish are always challenging to even the most avid bronze back fisherman, but the reward is excellent numbers of big fish. Back lake fishing offer it's own angling adventure with quantities of tail-dancing smallies, including in the mix plenty of 18-inch bass.
Lake trout, found lurking in shallow water in the spring and feeding 30ft down in the thermocline during the heat of the summer, average three to five pounds with fish in the teens not uncommon.
Northern Pike are never shy to surprise a leaderless bass or walleye fisherman, either by sawing off a line or giving a battle to remember.
The seventh species and most elusive, the Whitefish, is always the fish needed to capture the title of Eagle. If you catch all seven species during one stay you will be crowned a Beauchêne Eagle angler. |

| Additional Info |
La Reserve Beauchêne supplies to every two guests (except the guests at the campground) a 14-foot aluminum boat with 15hp outboard motors (new annually) for use on Lac Beauchene. 14-foot aluminum boats are also kept at almost all of the larger back lakes so you won't be required to carry a boat in to any of the back lakes.
The lodge is pleased to offer several boats with swivel padded seats, casting platforms, fish finder, 40 or 50hp and bow mounted trolling motors are available in addition to the standard lodge boats. These boats can be rented by guests for additional fee.
Only electric motors are permitted to be used on some of the smaller lakes. These and the necessary batteries are supplied. Some electric motors and batteries are also available for rental for use to supplement your outboard motor on the Big Lake.
All of the boats carry the obligatory personal floatation vests, throwing lines, whistles, and waterproof lights. Guests are also provided with use of boat cushions and landing nets.
Canoes are available at the Lodge for tripping or simply for a quiet evening paddle.
Guests who wish to bring their own boats are welcome to do so; there is a convenient concrete ramp at the lodge. Be sure to ask the lodge manager in advance about procedures for protecting against invasive specifies. The use of "personal water craft" and "muscle boats" is discouraged, in order to maintain a pristine wilderness experience. The use of ATV's on the roads and beaches is also discouraged - mainly to avoid encouraging strangers who are not guests to indulge in the same activities. That would present a problem for the protection of the fish and other wildlife.
Canoeing: For ardent canoeists Beauchêne offers several loops within its territory. The Lodge has available waterproof, practically indestructible maps of the territory printed on "Tyvec" with the portages marked. Individual hydrographic maps of the big lake and almost all of the back lakes are also available.
You will find no difficulty locating or managing the portages. They are kept open, most are short and both ends are marked with arrows. Canoe trippers are asked to restrict their camping to two or three convenient campsites that are sensibly spaced along the route. As a security measure, it is requested that you leave a trip plan at the Lodge before setting out.
Hunting: Beauchêne offers several different hunting packages - both guided and unguided. Spring bear, grouse and small game, and moose hunting is available at different times of the year.
Mountain Biking: Four mountain bikes are available for free use by guests. There are many miles of bush roads (most with no vehicles) of varying difficulty in Beauchêne that offer plenty of challenge for ardent bikers. Along the way you may see some wildlife and certainly you will come across a lot of tracks. If you plan on biking, please bring your own helmet.
Swimming: Beauchene's water is sweet, clear and clean. The big lake warms (at least on the surface) around the beginning of July each year. From then on, it is wonderful for swimming. There are no lifeguards on duty.
Hiking or Jogging: A woodland trail is available for guests who wish to burn some calories while taking a more intimate look at the reserve’s beautiful forests. Many of the specimen trees bear identification tags, adding to the interest.
Birding: Beauchêne provides plenty of opportunity for “Birders.” At different times of the year species include: Great Blue Herons, Herring Gulls, American Mergansers, Black Ducks, Brant Geese, Red Throated Grebes, Sandpipers, Belted Kingfishers, common loons, Osprey, Broad-Winged Hawks, Goshawks, Merlin, Bald Eagles, Ruffed and Spruce Grouse, and various kinds of woodpeckers.
French Lessons: Conversational French lessons, groups or individual, are available by pre-arrangement at the White House, at a reasonable cost. Please enquire before arrival. |
