Accommodations At Buffalo Creek Ranch, guest comfort is their utmost concern. The Wapiti Lodge (named after the Native American word for elk, which are so abundant here) is tastefully decorated in a western motif, complete with animal mounts, log furniture, old west photos, deep comfortable sofas and even a few Nancy Glazier prints for the art enthusiast. There are two kitchens, one for personal snacking and the other for group meals. There are three levels. Each level has two bedrooms that share a bath. They are constantly aware of the guest’s desire for privacy, and keep this in mind when your trip is booked. Groups and levels are not mixed. The Wapiti Lodge is as much like a comfortable home as they can possibly make it.

Bed choices range from queen size to side-by-side twins. There are three contemporary bathrooms stuffed with fluffy towels of individual colors for each guest.

The living areas have comfortable, deep sofas, glass fronted wood stoves, a phone and satellite television.
Dining Your choice of delicious and hearty meals are served family-style overlooking the deck, your six-person hot tub and the surrounding mountains. A variety of menu options are offered to guests to select from before they visit and can accommodate all dietary restrictions. Buffalo Creek Ranch takes pride in paying attention to detail and customer service. Their fully-stocked kitchens are always open, where you can find prepared snacks and drinks for between meal needs.

Special Entertainment There are plenty of riding opportunities for those who choose to horseback ride. Their horses are their pride, and they have horses for nearly every level of ability in the western discipline. Horses are as much a part of the ranch as the aspen trees. Draft horses are used to feed cattle in the winter. They raise and train horses there, mostly quarter horses and paints, so for the horse crazy kid in the family, there’s always a foal or two to play with. Your kids will be pleased, because these are foals, which were impprinted on birth and handled throughout their lives, so they’re as friendly and curious as your children (or you!) are. For the never-ever rider, riding lessons can be taken in their professional roping arena. And due to low guest load and high staff ratio, it is routine to go out riding one on one with your guide, exploring the ranch at your own pace on a horse you are comfortable with. No dude strings, please. That’s their motto.

As this is a working cattle ranch, real ranch work goes on here every single day. Guests are encouraged to participate in they are interested. Any phase of ranching is open to your level of interest. They won’t stage mock drives for you, but cattle always need to be tended, ridden and sometimes moved. All staff, including their professional cowboys, are experts at guest attendance, and enjoy the opportunity to mix up their work day a bit and possibly make a new friend. You’re here to enjoy, but they’ve found that they usually enjoy you at least as much. What can they say? It can get lonely up there.

They’ve also found that many outdoor lovers and sportsmen love to shoot. So, their professional trap range is open for a nominal charge. It’s an exciting way to wind down after a long day of winding down. If you don’t wish to bring your own shotgun, they have some there for you to use.

Speaking of nominal charges, the trap range is one of the only charges you will encounter outside of your package charge, and it just covers your shells. Who knows how much you’ll want to shoot? There might be an Annie Oakley wannabe in the group. The other charges would be if you decided to purchase gifts, flies, or fishing line from their Li’l Buffalo Fly Shop. Besides your fishing supplies and gifts, the Li’l Buffalo has a comfortable porch at the water’s edge of the Buffalo Creek and a fly-tying bench for your use. Don’t know how to tie flies and want to learn? Just ask your guide. They also own an Orvis Fly Shop in a nearby town, or Orvis fishing products are primarily used and sold on the ranch. Fly rods and waders can be borrowed free of charge.

There's also something for the big game hunter in you! Just think of it: 12,000 PRIVATE acres in a lush valley dramatically sheltered by the towering Continental Divide and Buffalo Ridge harboring a large resident elk herd year-round!

Additionally, you can also find a wide variety of winter activities. Winter guests visit for many reasons, but all revel in the incomparable quiet of the white winter woods. You are invited to start your day on the sleigh with the cowboys. After a hot, filling breakfast, strap on your skis or snowshoes to enjoy endless miles of groomed ski trails. The bolder adventurer may want to backcountry ski into steep mountain terrain and test their telemark turns.
Fishing Information For the fishing enthusiast, there are over 15 miles of live stream and six lakes, ranging in size from 6 to 40 acres. All of the fishing is private, so solitude and healthy fish are guaranteed. Outside the lodge, less than 100 yards away, Buffalo Creek is swarming with rainbows and brook trout ready to arm up your casting arm. This little stream has nice rock riffles and drops with deep holes and good clear openings for easy casting for the beginning angler. Another fishing opportunity within easy walking distance is the stunningly beautiful 40-acre Buffalo Lake full of fat, healthy trout where it is not unheard of to catch 100 fish in one day. Most first casting lessons are given at this lake. More serious anglers are given plenty of advanced fishing opportunities also. Private waters consist of small free-stone creeks, winding meadow streams which are fabulous wild brown trout habitat, the larger North Platte River, and of course, their trophy trout lakes. The opportunity to catch abundant fish in beautiful settings can change with your mood, without running out of new holes for weeks. And for the angler pursuing their own Ricky Mountain Grand Slam, catching one of each four species in a single day: the brooke trout, rainbow, brown and cutthroat, it can be accomplished all on their private water. They will take you fishing in the style of your choosing: drift boat, wade fishing, or belly boat. All private water and one on one attention.
Types of Fishing Fly fishing from shore, belly boat or MacKenzie-style drift boat. Use of boats and equipment is included in your package.
Species of Fish Caught Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Wild Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout
Additional Info Licenses, local flies, and terminal tackle are available for purchase in fly shop.
